Employees fired for using their pronouns in emails

A Christian Liberal Arts College in New York fired two employees in April for breaking the institution’s regulations by using their pronouns in the signatures of their emails.

The case was made public after the dismissed staff accused the school on their social accounts. A petition was also delivered with 753 signatures from alumni, current alumni, and faculty at Houghton University communicating concern over the firings.

According to Houghton University, residential directors Zelaya and Wilmot violated institutional policy in their apparent disagreement with the teaching of the Wesleyan Church.

According to the publication, The Christian Post, the plea made by the signatories explains:

The petition requests that “the current Houghton administration unequivocally affirm its commitment to charitable and respectful dialogue, not only in speech but also in action.” The signatories urged the school to “recognize that there is a variety of views reasonably held by faithful and active Christians on issues of gender, sexuality, and race.”

The dismissed employees cited one of the reasons for including their pronouns in their email signatures. They explained that it was due to the double-gender nature of their names, trying to avoid misunderstood.

The Wesleyan Church states, “Gender confusion and dysphoria are the consequences of the fallen condition of the human race.” However, The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities rejects the claim that its beliefs are “homophobic.”

Houghton’s president refused to sign the plea and defended the institution’s position on the fired staff.
