Leadership under fire: Steve Wood’s tenure as ACNA archbishop marred by accusations

Allegations Rock the Anglican Church of North America

Archbishop Steve Wood, head of the Anglican Church of North America (ACNA), is facing serious allegations of sexual harassment, bullying, and plagiarism. A formal complaint, or “presentment,” was submitted on October 21, signed by at least 10 clergy and lay leaders. The complaint includes claims of sexual immorality and violations of ordination vows.

Claire Buxton, a former children’s ministry director at St. Andrew’s Church in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, alleges that Wood tried to kiss her in April 2024. She also claims he gave her more than $3,000 from church funds and regularly praised her excessively. Other clergy accuse him of bullying and plagiarizing sermons.

Wood Denies Allegations, Cites Due Process

Archbishop Wood has denied all charges, stating, “I do not believe these allegations have any merit.” He affirmed trust in the church’s canonical process and declined to comment further. Despite the accusations, Wood remains in his roles as bishop of the Diocese of the Carolinas and as archbishop of ACNA.

Church officials asked signers of the presentment to re-sign under penalty of perjury. The group declined, arguing such action is not required by ACNA bylaws.

Pattern of Leadership Misconduct Raises Concerns

This is not the first crisis for the denomination. Since its 2009 founding, ACNA has grappled with repeated leadership scandals. In 2021, Mark Rivera, a former lay leader, was convicted of felony sexual assault. More than 10 leaders in the Upper Midwest diocese have since faced misconduct allegations.

Other recent controversies include the 2024 defrocking of Bishop Todd Atkinson for inappropriate relationships and the resignation of Bishop Derek Jones amid an investigation. Jones’ jurisdiction is now suing ACNA.

Supporters Cite Reform Efforts; Critics Point to Hypocrisy

Supporters of Wood point to reforms under his leadership, including hiring a safeguarding director and proposing misconduct policy overhauls. Wood has emphasized transparency and accountability.

However, critics see a widening credibility gap. “It’s just bizarre how far we’ve strayed from basic morals,” Buxton said. Detractors argue the denomination’s leadership culture fosters abuse and shields offenders.
