SBC ethics commission debate heats up before 2025 meeting

Letter Calls for Reform, Not Abolition

Ten former Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) presidents have signed an open letter urging the denomination to reform, rather than disband, its Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC). The former leaders acknowledged past controversies and shortcomings in the agency but argued that those issues warrant correction, not eradication. “A sledgehammer is not the tool for adjusting a mirror,” they wrote, emphasizing the ERLC’s continuing value to the SBC.

Mixed Legacy and Political Tensions

The ERLC has long been a lightning rod in SBC circles due to its involvement in public policy and social issues. The commission has addressed topics like abortion, immigration, and sexuality, sometimes drawing ire from grassroots members and political conservatives. Tensions intensified under former ERLC President Russell Moore, who openly criticized Donald Trump. Detractors argue the ERLC is out of touch with local congregations and overly critical of conservative politics.

Internal Conflict Adds to Controversy

Recent leadership turmoil has fueled more criticism. In 2024, confusion erupted after conflicting announcements about current ERLC President Brent Leatherwood’s status. The chair of the board of trustees initially stated that Leatherwood was fired, but then resigned the following day, while the board clarified that Leatherwood remained in office. These events deepened existing concerns over the agency’s stability and transparency.

Critics Push for Shutdown Ahead of 2025 Meeting

As the SBC’s 2025 annual meeting approaches, critics plan to introduce motions to shut down the ERLC. Previous votes have failed, but the opposition continues to grow. Some plan to propose stricter guidelines for the agency’s operations. The SBC constitution requires two successful votes to eliminate any agency, and the upcoming June gathering in Dallas may prove decisive.

Supporters Say ERLC Still Serves a Vital Role

Despite internal and external criticism, former SBC presidents argue the ERLC still serves an essential purpose. “The largest Protestant evangelical denomination in the country should have a voice in Washington,” said James Merritt, a former president. The letter encourages Southern Baptists to pursue change through existing governance channels rather than dissolving the commission outright.
