Operation Begins with Forceful Tactics and Mounting Fear
The Trump administration’s “largest operation to date” targeting immigrants began with violent raids across Minneapolis, culminating in the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good. Federal immigration agents, including ICE and Customs and Border Protection, descended on the Twin Cities in early December. They detained individuals at homes, schools, and public spaces, often wearing masks and carrying rifles. Many in Minneapolis, including human rights advocates, had feared such an escalation.
The administration claimed its sweeping actions were needed to remove dangerous criminals. However, critics say the operation has indiscriminately targeted undocumented immigrants and U.S. citizens alike. A review by Minnesota Public Radio found most detainees had no criminal records.
Community Leaders Warned of Tragedy Before Fatal Shooting
Advocates had repeatedly warned that the administration’s show of force could lead to loss of life. Setareh Ghandehari, advocacy director at Detention Watch Network, noted that “hyper-militarized enforcement” tactics were unlike anything seen before. She warned that more deaths could follow if agencies continue acting without accountability.
Good’s death occurred in broad daylight, witnessed by dozens. The Department of Homeland Security alleged she attempted to run over agents with her vehicle. But videos and eyewitnesses contradicted that claim. In similar cases, judges have previously dismissed ICE allegations involving vehicle threats.
Surge in Deaths and Officer-Involved Shootings Raises Alarm
Since Trump’s second term began, immigration officers have been linked to 14 shootings, four of them fatal. In one September case, officers shot and injured an undocumented man near Chicago. Beyond shootings, deaths have also occurred during raids—one man died fleeing agents in Virginia, another fell from a roof during a California raid.
In 2025 alone, 32 people died in ICE custody—the most since 2004.
Raids Spark Chaos at Minneapolis School
Hours after Good’s death, armed agents stormed Roosevelt High School. They tackled people, handcuffed staff, and deployed chemical agents on bystanders. A school official described their behavior as “animalistic,” reflecting the community’s growing outrage and fear.
The administration maintains the raids are lawful, but pressure from civil rights groups is intensifying as violence escalates.
