Saint Augustine’s University remains accredited as lawsuit proceeds

A United States District Court has issued a preliminary injunction ensuring Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) in North Carolina will remain accredited as classes begin Sept. 2. The historically African American institution, affiliated with The Episcopal Church, filed legal action against the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) after its accreditation was revoked.

SACSCOC trustees voted in December 2023 to revoke SAU’s accreditation, citing financial instability. An appeals committee upheld that decision in February 2024. SAU pursued arbitration, but in March 2024, the final ruling confirmed its removal from membership. Despite the setback, the injunction maintains SAU’s accreditation while litigation continues.

Financial Struggles and Cost-Cutting

SAU has faced mounting financial difficulties. Reports from the U.S. Department of Labor show employees missed paychecks for multiple periods. To reduce expenses, the university shifted most classes online, cut its staff in half, and eliminated dozens of administrative and faculty positions. Officials claim expenses dropped by $17 million between 2023 and 2024.

Community Support and Alumni Contributions

The legal fight was fueled by significant community backing. Alumni and supporters raised funds for legal expenses, with the National Alumni Association of SAU contributing $100,000 toward the filing of the injunction. University leaders credited this solidarity for keeping accreditation intact as the case proceeds.

Supporters and Critics Express Concerns

Supporters argue the court order protects students and preserves SAU’s historic mission while financial recovery plans continue. Alumni emphasize the importance of ensuring graduates’ degrees retain value during uncertain times. Critics, however, question whether SAU can sustain its operations in the long term, pointing to persistent deficits and repeated missed payrolls. SACSCOC maintains that its removal decision reflected serious concerns about the school’s stability.
