Historic Gift Marks Milestone Anniversary
Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, celebrated its 150th anniversary with a record-breaking $150 million donation. The Moody Foundation, a Texas-based nonprofit, provided the largest-ever single gift to a private historically Black college or university (HBCU). Trustee Ross Moody announced the donation during the school’s fall convocation, surprising students, faculty, and alumni.

Ross Moody emphasized the significance of the gift for both the foundation and the university. He noted it was the largest donation in the foundation’s 80-year history. HT President Melva K. Wallace admitted she was told to expect $130 million, making the $150 million announcement even more moving. Huston-Tillotson’s Legacy and Growth
Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson currently enrolls 1,056 students. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ, the school has deep Christian roots. The Moody Foundation’s first gift to the university dates back to 1968, reflecting a long-standing relationship. Supporters believe the new donation strengthens HT’s mission of academic excellence and faith-based education.
