Moody Foundation makes largest-ever gift to a private HBCU

Historic Gift Marks Milestone Anniversary

Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, celebrated its 150th anniversary with a record-breaking $150 million donation. The Moody Foundation, a Texas-based nonprofit, provided the largest-ever single gift to a private historically Black college or university (HBCU). Trustee Ross Moody announced the donation during the schoolโ€™s fall convocation, surprising students, faculty, and alumni.

Moody Foundationโ€™s Largest Contribution

Ross Moody emphasized the significance of the gift for both the foundation and the university. He noted it was the largest donation in the foundationโ€™s 80-year history. The funds will support innovative scholarships and multiple endowments. University leaders said the gift would transform opportunities for students while reinforcing Huston-Tillotsonโ€™s community impact.

An Emotional Reveal for Leadership

HT President Melva K. Wallace admitted she was told to expect $130 million, making the $150 million announcement even more moving. She referenced a biblical verse while addressing the audience, highlighting gratitude and faith. Students and attendees applauded and cheered the historic moment, which had been kept secret for months.

Huston-Tillotsonโ€™s Legacy and Growth

Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson currently enrolls 1,056 students. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ, the school has deep Christian roots. The Moody Foundationโ€™s first gift to the university dates back to 1968, reflecting a long-standing relationship. Supporters believe the new donation strengthens HTโ€™s mission of academic excellence and faith-based education.

Supporters and Concerns

Advocates view the donation as a crucial step toward educational equity for HBCUs, helping address funding disparities. They argue that the endowment will benefit not only students but also the broader community. Critics, however, question whether relying on massive private gifts makes schools vulnerable to donor influence. Some also raise concerns about long-term sustainability once the spotlight fades.
