The City KC pursues Grandview properties tied to disgraced IHOPKC

A fast-growing multi-ethnic church based in Raytown, Missouri, is aiming to raise $2 million to acquire two major properties previously owned by the embattled International House of Prayer Kansas City (IHOPKC). The City KC, led by Pastor Armour Stephenson III, hopes to relocate to Grandview, just 11 miles away, where the properties offer significant potential for ministry expansion.

Former IHOPKC Buildings Offer Strategic Expansion Opportunity

The properties include a 52,000-square-foot building with a 1,400-seat sanctuary, formerly Forerunner Church, and a nearby 30-acre site with a large auditorium and commercial kitchen, previously IHOPKCโ€™s Childrenโ€™s Equipping Center. While the buildings were never publicly listed for sale, Stephenson said a direct meeting with IHOPKCโ€™s CFO clarified the opportunity, prompting the increase in fundraising goals from $500,000 to $2 million.

Supporters Frame Move as Redemptive, While Critics Call for Transparency

Stephenson framed the acquisitions as spiritually redemptive, referring to them as โ€œsacred groundโ€ for revival and leadership training. Supporters within The City KC view the move as essential for growth and fulfilling the churchโ€™s broader mission through its AROMA Campaign. However, detractors voice concern over transparency. Critics, including former IHOPKC staffer Susan Tyrrell, warn about the lack of public listings and financial disclosure, especially since IHOPKC is tax-exempt and not required to file IRS Form 990.

IHOPKCโ€™s Crisis Spurs Asset Liquidation

IHOPKC has been in decline since October 2023, when founder Mike Bickle was accused of sexually abusing 17 women. A third-party investigation also found other leaders shielded abusers. The ministry hemorrhaged funds in 2024 and considered rebranding to avoid legal liability. Lawsuits and ongoing scrutiny have compelled the organization to divest properties, including the two now being pursued by The City KC.

Future Vision Rooted in Kansas Cityโ€™s Spiritual Renewal

Stephenson said his church has outgrown its current space and sees these properties as vital to fostering spiritual renewal in Kansas City and beyond. He insists this is a โ€œfaith-stretchingโ€ moment and urges donors to rally by December 15 to secure the purchase.
