Plans for a new church connected to the International House of Prayer Kansas City (IHOPKC) have been canceled. An email from the reconfigured IHOPKC board of trustees confirmed this, clarifying that IHOPKC is not shutting down despite closing many of its “expressions,” including Forerunner Church and IHOP University.
Departure of the Bennetts
Former IHOPKC Executive Team Member Isaac Bennett and his wife, Morgan, have left the ministry. They were initially planning to pastor the new church. The board expressed excitement for the Bennetts’ future ministry despite the cancellation.
Continuation of the Prayer Room
The IHOPKC prayer room will continue its operations independently of any external church. The board emphasized the importance of 24/7 prayer, especially in current times, and is committed to sustaining a vibrant spiritual community. The prayer room will maintain a focus on prayer for Israel, training, and discipleship.
Financial and Governance Challenges
Since allegations against founder Mike Bickle surfaced, IHOPKC has faced financial issues, losing $500,000 monthly due to declining donations. The board is working on a formal governance structure to ensure accountability and spiritual strength for the prayer room’s long-term health.
Controversy and Criticism
IHOPKC has been mired in controversy since allegations of sexual abuse by Bickle emerged. Financial difficulties have compounded the issues, leading to significant internal restructuring. Former IHOPKC staff have criticized the board’s handling of feedback and concerns, citing instances of ignored appeals and threats of firing.
New Board Members
The email revealed the current board members for the first time, including Chairman General Kurt Fuller, Malachi O’Brien, Ed Hackett, Wellington Boone, Cindy Dodd, and Steve Brandt. The board invited feedback from the community and promised to support staff.
