Historic Confirmation at St. Paulโs Cathedral
On January 28, Sarah Mullally was officially confirmed as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury during a ceremony at the Church of England. Her confirmation marks the first time a woman has held the position in the Church of Englandโs 1,400-year history. Mullally described her appointment as โan extraordinary and humbling privilegeโ and pledged to lead with โcalmness, consistency and compassion.โ
A Global Celebration of Unity and Faith
The Confirmation of Election brought together Church of England leaders and members of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The ceremony featured hymns and readings in English, Xhosa, and Portuguese to reflect the Communionโs global diversity. Representatives from New Zealand and Argentina participated, offering prayers and words of encouragement. Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell delivered the Charge, and Mullally gave her first blessing after taking up the Primatial Cross.
Reactions from Supporters and Global Church Leaders
Many church leaders welcomed Mullallyโs appointment with enthusiasm. The Rt. Rev. Anthony Poggo, secretary general of the Anglican Communion, prayed for her discernment as she takes on her new role. New York Bishop Matthew Heyd, whose diocese has a longstanding relationship with London, praised her past ministry and expressed hope in her leadership. Bishop Libby Lane and Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe also voiced strong support, particularly for her commitment to inclusion and safeguarding vulnerable people.
Challenges Ahead and a Pledge for Healing
Mullally steps into the role during a period of division and transition. Her predecessor, Justin Welby, resigned in 2025 following criticism over his handling of child abuse allegations. In response, Mullally emphasized her dedication to justice, equity, and the protection of abuse survivors. She also called for hospitality and reconciliation within a fractured world, saying she hopes the church becomes a safe space for all.
Preparing for Public Ministry
Mullally will be officially installed on March 25 at Canterbury Cathedral, where she will preach her first sermon as archbishop. Before then, she will pay homage to King Charles and co-preside at the Church of Englandโs General Synod in February. As โfirst among equalsโ among Anglican primates, she will guide the Communion through key gatherings, including the Primatesโ Meeting and the Lambeth Conference.
