Sermon Inspires Reflection on Mothersโ Role
On March 10, 2024, Bishop David Kodia preached at St. Michael and All Angels Cathedral in Bondo, Kenya. He emphasized the biblical account of Jesus healing a blind man, urging mothers to confront violence and shape society. Kodia described mothersโ testimonies as powerful tools for transformation rooted in faith.
Ministry for Widows Emerges
The Rev. Carolyne Adhola, now in Maryland, recalled the cathedral as the birthplace of the Daughters of Zion (DOZ). She founded the ministry to support widows, providing them with knowledge, justice, and care. Despite skepticism, Adhola pioneered youth and worship ministries before establishing DOZ, inspired by Isaiah 54:4. The testimonies of widows motivated her to build a faith-based support system.
Growing Groups and Economic Initiatives
With clergy backing, DOZ spread across Bondo and Southern Nyanza dioceses. Early initiatives included โtable banking,โ a savings and loan system empowering widows. Groups expanded to crop farming, poultry rearing, goat keeping, and soap-making. Widows who once left the church reengaged through economic independence and fellowship.
Ongoing Challenges and Financial Strain
Sustaining the ministry from abroad presents difficulties. Inflation and taxes threaten operations, while widows question long-term viability. DOZ faces a monthly budget shortfall of $810, with Adhola and donors covering expenses. The ministry supports 186 orphans and numerous widows, many battling mental health challenges and systemic exclusion.
Land Rights and Cultural Barriers
Kenyaโs patriarchal traditions continue to marginalize widows. Dr. Mbithuka Nzomo of the National Gender and Equality Commission highlighted widespread denial of inheritance rights. Few women hold land titles, leaving widows and their children vulnerable. With 2.2 million orphans nationwide, many face poverty, trauma, and exploitation under widow-led households.
Hope and Resilience for the Future
Despite setbacks, Adhola believes in DOZโs potential. She sees opportunities for training, mental health care, and strengthened savings groups. Parish groups currently hold modest capital, yet their resilience demonstrates hope. Through compassion and shared faith, DOZ continues to empower widows to rebuild their dignity and security.
