Second Baptist volunteer charged: CSAM found after tip to authorities

A former youth ministry volunteer at Second Baptist Church Houston has been arrested for possession of child sex abuse material (CSAM). Carter Thomas, 27, came under investigation in August after reportedly admitting to struggling with viewing child pornography online. The arrest has drawn sharp reactions due to the churchโ€™s prominent role in the Southern Baptist Convention and its large congregation.

Church Responds to Volunteerโ€™s Arrest

Second Baptist Church, a major Houston megachurch led by Pastor Ben Young, clarified that Thomas was not part of the pastoral staff. The church emphasized that Thomas had already stopped volunteering by the time the investigation began. In its public statement, Second Baptist said it immediately notified authorities upon learning of the situation and continues to cooperate with law enforcement.

Church officials highlighted that all youth ministry volunteers undergo background checks every two years. They also reiterated their commitment to child safety, stating they have โ€œzero tolerance for child abuse or neglect of any kind.โ€

Investigation Uncovers Explicit Material

Law enforcement seized Thomasโ€™ devices and found 23 images of CSAM, including photos of nude minors under the age of 17. Fourteen of these images had already been identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A forensic analysis confirmed that Thomas’ web history matched the content found on his devices.

During a search of his home, Harris County Sheriffโ€™s deputies interviewed a family member who said Thomas had previously confessed to struggling with โ€œthat kind of material.โ€ Thomas now faces one count of possession of CSAM.

Public Outcry and Ongoing Scrutiny

Supporters of the church commend its swift response and transparency. But critics argue that background checks alone are insufficient safeguards, especially in large organizations with access to minors. The incident has renewed calls for stronger oversight of youth volunteers in faith communities.

Thomas has been released on a $15,000 bond and is barred from being within 1,000 feet of places where children gather.
