Supporters across the UK have raised over $124,000 to assist students affected by Spurgeonโs Collegeโs sudden shutdown. The Baptist Union of Great Britain launched an emergency appeal after the historic theological institution closed without warning in July 2025. The fundraising total reflects strong backing for theological education and ministerial training amid significant disruption.
Financial Collapse Leaves 200 Students in Limbo
Founded in 1856 by renowned preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the London-based college ended operations after 169 years. Trustees cited severe financial strain, falling enrollment, and the collapse of a major funding partnership. Approximately 200 students were left uncertain about their academic futures, finances, and ministry credentials.
Rapid Response Brings Some Stability
In response, the Baptist Union created a temporary Student Support Office staffed by former college personnel. This team worked swiftly to secure academic records, issue certificates, and ensure students remained eligible for ministry pathways. These efforts helped minimize disruption and preserve studentsโ progress toward accreditation.
Fundraising Appeal Exceeds Expectations
With many students still experiencing financial hardship, the Union launched a targeted appeal in September 2025. By early November, over ยฃ90,000 had been raised, allowing the Union to fully refund studentsโ fees and offer additional support for those continuing in ministry training.
Ministries team co-leader Tim Fergusson said, โWe have been delighted and humbled by the generosity and compassion of Baptists across our Union.โ
Concerns Remain Despite Ongoing Support
Supporters praised the quick action and broad generosity, but others remain concerned about long-term theological education options. The Union continues to invest in ministerial development, maintaining a ยฃ140,000 annual bursary fund. They also encourage prayer for students and staff still affected by the closureโs fallout.
