Stunning Settlement: Gateway Church and Morris Drop Retirement Lawsuit

The Gateway Church retirement settlement ends a bitter court dispute over Robert Morrisโ€™ promised payouts. CBS News reported no clear sign of compensation for Morris and his wife, Debbie. The settlement closes one case, but it also keeps scrutiny on Gateway Church’s retirement payments. And it lands as the church continues to confront fallout from Morrisโ€™ downfall.

Abuse Allegations Drove Morrisโ€™ 2024 Resignation

Morris founded the Southlake, Texas-based multisite megachurch, but he resigned in disgrace in the summer of 2024. Cindy Clemishire accused him of child sex abuse tied to the 1980s. She said the abuse began when she was 12. Morris traveled as an evangelist at the time, so he sometimes stayed with her family in Oklahoma.

Leaders Knew or Should Have Asked More Questions

Gateway hired a third-party investigator after Morris left the pulpit. The inquiry examined whether leaders covered up criminal sexual misconduct. Investigators found multiple high-level leaders either knew Clemishire was a child or had enough information to press for answers. The church removed those leaders from their positions because the findings raised serious concerns about oversight and accountability.

Criminal Case Ended With Jail Time and Probation

In March 2025, Oklahoma charged Morris with five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. In October 2025, he pleaded guilty under a sentencing agreement. He received a 10-year sentence, but all except six months was suspended. After serving time in the Osage County Jail, he was released in March 2026. He now serves the remainder of his sentence on probation in Texas.

Retirement Payments Dispute Settled, With More Suits Ahead

Before resigning, Morris was promised $800,000 annually until age 70. He was also promised $600,000 per year after that, for life, for him or Debbie. Gateway argued that his criminal actions violated the terms of his employment, so he forfeited future pay. Now both sides have agreed to dismiss the case without prejudice, and each will pay its own legal costs.

Supporters of the settlement may say it limits legal spending and protects the churchโ€™s mission. Detractors may argue it avoids transparency, but questions persist because other lawsuits remain active.
