Alabama man charged after threats to religious leaders

Arrest and charges

Federal prosecutors charged Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker with Interstate Communications Threat. Authorities arrested him in Needham, Alabama. State charges also allege resisting arrest and illegal pistol possession. He remains held in the Choctaw County Jail.

Threatening calls and texts

An FBI affidavit describes menacing calls and texts to religious leaders. Targets included rabbis in Alabama and Louisiana, an imam in Georgia, and a church in North Carolina. One voicemail told a rabbi, “I want you to die.” Other messages warned an imam to “watch his back.” Texts to an Islamic center referenced war and defense.

Search results and evidence

Investigators found multiple firearms and boxes of ammunition. They recovered a semi-automatic rifle, shotgun, handgun, and body armor carrier. Authorities also seized a suitcase of ammunition. Papers listing names, addresses, and phone numbers of religious leaders were among the items.

Suspect’s statements and mental health

Shoemaker told agents he intended intimidation, not violence. He said his communications were “satire” and psychological warfare. Court documents suggest he has a diagnosed mental illness. The diagnosis name is redacted in public filings. His grandmother told investigators he had stopped taking medication.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Sara Jones praised the rapid multi-agency action. She said agencies acted within hours after learning of threats. A sheriff’s office posted images of the weapons and ammunition seized. Shoemaker’s state defense lawyer declined to comment when reached.

Supporters’ and detractors’ concerns

Law enforcement supporters stress public safety and coordinated response. They emphasize the credible nature of threats and seized weapons. Detractors point to Shoemaker’s claims of satire and his mental illness. They question whether the statements reflect an intent to harm or an untreated illness. Court proceedings will weigh evidence, motive, and mental-health issues.
