Former Tradwives Speak Out Against Religious Control and Domestic Abuse

The tradwife movement backlash is gaining attention as former influencers describe experiences involving domestic abuse, religious control and financial insecurity. Tia Levings, Bernadine Bluntly and Jennie Gage have publicly challenged the traditional gender roles they once embraced or promoted. Although their experiences differ, all three now question the risks of relationships built around strict female submission and financial dependence.

Tia Levings Describes Religious Control and Abuse

Tia Levings married at 19 and raised four children within fundamentalist Christian communities. She says religious advisers encouraged her to become more submissive when she sought help for domestic abuse. After escaping with her children in October 2007, she began speaking publicly about the role religious teachings can play in enabling coercive control.

In her memoir, A Well-Trained Wife: My Escape from Christian Patriarchy, Levings recounts experiences of physical, emotional, financial, spiritual and psychological abuse. She describes her former marriage as “church-sanctioned domestic abuse” and warns that religious authority can be used to justify harmful relationships.

Former Influencers Reject Extreme Gender Roles

The tradwife movement backlash also includes Bernadine Bluntly, who previously promoted female submission and sold anti-feminist merchandise. Following her divorce, Bluntly publicly rejected extreme gender expectations and apologized for her earlier messaging. She obtained a restraining order against her former husband, whom she accused of abuse, although he denies the allegation. Bluntly remains Christian but rejects using religious teachings to justify control.

Meanwhile, Jennie Gage describes leaving a 24-year marriage without financial security after years without her own bank account. Through her LifeTakeTwo platform, she encourages women pursuing full-time homemaking to maintain independent savings, retirement resources and legal protections. Her experience illustrates the financial vulnerability that can accompany complete economic dependence on a spouse.

Research Examines Why Women Leave Tradwife Culture

An April 2026 study identified two forms of “de-tradding”: rejecting the tradwife label while maintaining a traditional lifestyle, and abandoning the lifestyle itself. Researchers associated the latter with accounts of domestic violence, infidelity and unequal relationship power. These findings provide context for women questioning traditional gender expectations.

However, traditional homemaking does not necessarily involve coercion, abuse or religious submission. Some lifestyle creators, including Nara Smith, reject the tradwife label despite producing content associated with traditional domestic roles. Critics of the movement focus particularly on teachings that normalize unequal power and discourage financial independence. The accounts of Levings, Bluntly and Gage raise concerns about those risks while leaving room for women who freely choose traditional domestic arrangements.
