Silas Shelton, a Southern Baptist pastor from Blanchester, Ohio, has been hit with two additional felony charges of arson while already in custody for 11 alleged sex crimes. Shelton, who led Blanchester Community Ministries, was initially arrested on October 15. He remains in Clinton County Adult Detention Center on a $2 million bond.
Allegations Date Back to 2019
The initial charges against Shelton include rape, sexual battery, and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Authorities allege that the abuse began in 2019 when the victim, a member of Shelton’s congregation, was just 14 or 15 years old. Investigators say the victim felt psychologically trapped due to Shelton’s pastoral authority.
The alleged abuse reportedly continued into 2025. Officials emphasized that Shelton exploited his spiritual role to exert control. The case has sparked serious concerns within the local community and broader faith circles.
New Arson Charges Deepen Legal Trouble
Shelton now also faces two arson charges related to a fire that occurred in July 2025. According to investigators, he is accused of deliberately setting fire to a home and an SUV. The motive behind the alleged arson has not been disclosed, but authorities say the evidence warranted the new charges.
These developments have intensified scrutiny and significantly complicated Shelton’s legal situation. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Public Stance on LGBTQ+ Issues Draws Backlash
In 2023, Shelton made headlines after speaking out at a local school board meeting against the “Heartstopper” book series, criticizing its LGBTQ+ themes. He claimed the content made him feel “sick” and warned of so-called “health risks of being gay.” His remarks drew sharp criticism from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and some community members.
Shelton also previously advocated for daily recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance in schools, citing the importance of national values.
Church Silent Amid Scandal
Blanchester Community Ministries has gone silent. ChurchLeaders was unable to contact the ministry, and its online presence has vanished. With no active website, deactivated social media, and a disconnected phone line, the church has not issued a public statement. The lack of transparency has further alarmed some residents.
