The Caleb Flynn murder trial begins May 4, and prosecutors may call the coupleโs children to testify. The case centers on the death of Ashley Flynn, 37, who was killed in their home. Investigators charged Caleb Flynn in February, days after he called 911 and blamed a home intruder. A grand jury indicted him on March 19, so the case now moves toward trial with sweeping allegations. The indictment includes one count of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, and two counts of felonious assault. It also includes three counts of tampering with evidence and two counts of intimidation tied to a criminal case.
911 Recording Captures Intruder Claim and Panic
A 911 recording from early Feb. 16 shows Flynn saying someone broke into the home and shot his wife. He told the dispatcher she had โtwo shots to her head,โ and he described blood throughout the scene. He repeated โOh my Godโ as he spoke, but he kept pushing the intruder narrative. Flynn also claimed he was with the children when the shooting happened. The children are 9 and 12, and that detail now hangs over the courtroom strategy.
Community Ties Highlight a High-Profile Local Case
Flynn once served as a worship pastor and remained active as a worship leader at Christian Life Center in Dayton. He also worked as vice president of sales at Richard D. Smith & Sons, his father-in-lawโs business in Tipp City. Ashley Flynn balanced several roles, and her schedule reflected deep community ties. She taught with LifeWise Academy, worked as a substitute teacher, and coached seventh-grade volleyball. She also volunteered at her church, so friends and colleagues now track each development closely.
Witness List Signals Church Connections and Missing Names
A state witness list released April 10 includes Flynnโs pastor, Jordan Hansen, from Christian Life Center. It also lists Alleigha Botner, who resigned as the churchโs worship pastor without explanation after Flynnโs arrest. The witness list does not publicly name the Flynn daughters, but two sections are redacted. That secrecy leaves questions about whether the children will testify and how they might be called.
Child Testimony Protections and the Juryโs Home Visit
At an April 23 hearing, Flynnโs attorney argued for special accommodations if the children testify, citing Ohio Revised Code Section 2945.483. The court has not decided whether they would testify in the courtroom or from another room, and Judge Jeannine Pratt is expected to rule soon. The judge also agreed to a jury visit to the Flynn home, but only if it remains exactly as it was that night. Flynn waived his right to attend the visit. Supporters say child protections matter because testimony could deepen trauma, but detractors worry special measures could affect how jurors weigh what the children saw and heard.
