Pastor and ministry leader Ché Ahn announced his candidacy for California governor, citing a divine calling as the inspiration behind his decision. Ahn, 69, said he experienced a spiritual encounter on April 28 at 2:22 a.m., followed by what he saw as confirmation when he was invited to the White House. Though initially reluctant, Ahn accepted the call, saying he believes God is directing his campaign.
From Immigrant Roots to Global Ministry Leader
Born in post-war South Korea, Ahn immigrated to the U.S. with his family. Despite early challenges, he earned degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary and, with his wife Sue, founded Harvest Rock Church in 1994. Their ministry later expanded globally into Harvest International Ministry (HIM), a network active in over 70 nations. Ahn’s personal story is rooted in perseverance and faith, which he sees as key campaign themes.
A Faith-Driven Alternative to Traditional Politicians
Ahn joins a crowded Republican field, including Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco and commentator Steve Hilton. Yet he believes his biblical worldview distinguishes him. “We need not just another politician,” he said, arguing that California’s core issues — crime, homelessness, and economic disparity — stem from spiritual decay. He views himself as a revivalist, seeking to restore moral and spiritual order within the state.
Criticism of Newsom and California’s Policy Direction
Ahn blames Governor Gavin Newsom for California’s struggles, citing high poverty rates and excessive environmental restrictions. He argued that California, despite its vast resources, suffers under “extreme” policies that have shut down oil fields and stalled critical infrastructure. His platform emphasizes “common sense” solutions, including wildfire prevention and business-friendly reforms.
Supporters See a Moral Voice; Critics Question Viability
Supporters view Ahn as a moral reformer and cultural counterweight to progressive leadership. Detractors, however, question his lack of political experience and the feasibility of a Republican win in a deep-blue state. With Democrats holding a strong voter advantage, analysts say his chances are slim. Still, Ahn remains undeterred, saying, “I’m all in to win,” and insisting that California’s future can still be shaped by faith-driven leadership.
