Resumes Performances After Nearly Three-Year Hiatus
Grammy-winning singer Dante Bowe has rejoined Maverick City Music for live performances, marking his return nearly three years after the group paused their partnership with him. Bowe appeared with the worship collective on May 13 in St. Lucia, as shown in a video shared to Maverick City Music’s Instagram. On May 17, Bowe also led worship before nearly 6,000 attendees in Cincinnati, according to ChurchLeaders.
Suspension Stemmed From Accidental Nude Post
In September 2022, Maverick City Music publicly announced a break from Bowe, citing “behavior inconsistent with our core values.” The behavior referred to a nude image that Bowe accidentally uploaded to Instagram. Founders Norman Gyamfi and Jonathan Jay later confirmed the incident on their “Mavericks on the Mic” podcast in December 2024. Gyamfi emphasized the group’s responsibility to uphold Christian values, especially given their influence among young fans.
Bowe Says Post Was an Accident
In an October 2024 appearance on the “Let’s Be Clear” podcast, Bowe explained the context of the photo. He said it was taken with Instagram’s camera after stepping out of the shower, meant solely to track fitness progress. Bowe insisted there was no sexual intent but admitted the image was inappropriate for public view.
Additional Incidents Cited but Not Grounds for Suspension
Another viral clip showed Bowe singing along to Bad Bunny’s explicit song “Después de la Playa” on a party bus. While the video drew criticism, Gyamfi and Jay said it wasn’t the cause for the suspension. They reiterated that only the nude photo triggered the hiatus.
Supporters Welcome Return, Critics Raise Concerns
Bowe issued a now-deleted apology in 2022 and canceled a 14-city tour. He expressed the need to mentally and physically rest from public life. His recent return has been met with mixed reactions. Supporters applaud his transparency and growth, while critics question whether the collective’s values remain intact.
