Rise to Fame Through Preaching and Music
Jimmy Swaggart, the once-celebrated televangelist and Pentecostal preacher, has passed away at the age of 90. Known for his fiery sermons and gospel piano performances, Swaggart built a multimillion-dollar ministry that reached millions in the 1980s. A cousin of musicians Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley, he began preaching in Louisiana before launching radio, print, and television programs. At the height of his popularity, his ministry earned $142 million in a single year.
Scandals Undermine His Influence
Swaggart’s downfall began in 1988 when he was caught with prostitute Debra Murphree in a New Orleans motel. He issued a tearful televised apology, saying, “I have sinned against you,” but offered few specifics. The Assemblies of God defrocked him for rejecting their disciplinary demands, including a year-long preaching ban. He later resigned, claiming separation was necessary to preserve his ministry and Bible college.
Rivalries and Recurring Controversies
Swaggart’s exposure stemmed from a feud with fellow preacher Marvin Gorman, whom Swaggart had accused of sexual misconduct. Gorman retaliated by hiring a private investigator to capture incriminating photos of Swaggart. In 1991, Swaggart faced more trouble when police in California found him with another prostitute, leading to further public embarrassment and satire on national television.
Supporters Defend His Legacy
Despite repeated scandals, Swaggart retained a devoted following. His son Donnie Swaggart called him a “faithful servant” who lived for “the cause of Christ.” In later years, Swaggart focused on his Baton Rouge-based church, maintaining a broadcast presence across 21 states and online. He remained a fixture at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, often appearing alongside his son.
Critics Point to Hypocrisy and Harm
Detractors criticized Swaggart’s harsh rhetoric and moral hypocrisy. He attacked Catholicism and made inflammatory remarks about Jews and LGBTQ individuals. A 2004 comment about killing a gay man drew backlash, though he later apologized. Critics argue that his influence diminished as a result of these controversies.
