A Life Devoted to Scripture
Kay Arthur, renowned Bible teacher and co-founder of Precept Ministries International, died today at age 91 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Surrounded by family, Arthur passed away after decades of impactful Christian ministry that reached millions worldwide. Her organization confirmed her death, saying she will be remembered “for her love for the Lord, His Word, and His people.”
Arthur authored more than 100 Bible studies and books. Through Precept’s inductive Bible study method, which focused on observation, interpretation, and application, she empowered believers to engage deeply with Scripture. “When you know what God says…you will be equipped for every circumstance of life,” she often said.
From Brokenness to Global Ministry
Born in Michigan in 1933, Arthur was raised in church but admitted not knowing God personally until adulthood. After a difficult divorce and personal struggles, she experienced a profound spiritual transformation. She married Jack Arthur in 1965, and together they launched Precept Ministries from their home in Chattanooga.
Their ministry, built on a modest 32-acre farm, expanded globally, reaching 190 countries and publishing resources in over 110 languages. High school boot camps, leadership retreats, and television programs like Precepts for Life helped establish her as a leading voice in evangelical circles.
Impact on Evangelicalism
Arthur received numerous honors, including the NRB Hall of Fame induction and the ECPA Pinnacle Award. Even after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2020, she stayed engaged in ministry. Precept’s reach and influence grew, especially through her son David Arthur, who now leads the organization.
Supporters praised her integrity and commitment, often contrasting her lifestyle with that of more opulent Christian leaders. Critics noted the exclusivity of inductive study methods and the sometimes rigid structure of her teachings. Still, even some detractors acknowledged her authenticity and consistency.
Legacy of Courage and Compassion
Arthur is survived by her three sons, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Her private memorial service in Chattanooga will be livestreamed. The family has requested donations to the Kay Arthur Memorial Fund.
Her legacy endures through the millions she taught, the Scriptures she championed, and the courage she displayed in both public ministry and private life.
