Ken Paxton’s Dubai trip intensified scrutiny around the Texas attorney general and Senate candidate. A Wall Street Journal video showed Paxton in Dubai on New Yearโs Eve 2024 beside girlfriend Tracy Duhon. The footage also placed him near Sameer Suhail and Anosh Ahmed, two indicted donors tied to health care fraud cases.
Ahmed and Suhail faced federal allegations connected to an Illinois hospital where Ahmed served as chief financial officer. Prosecutors accused them of embezzling $15 million. Ahmed later faced another case involving $195 million in allegedly faulty COVID-19 tests sold to the government.
Indicted Donors Add Pressure
Ahmed donated $190,000 to Paxtonโs campaign, including $25,000 shortly after his indictment. Suhail also supported Paxton, and both men spent time outside the United States after charges surfaced. Ahmed later traveled to Serbia, where authorities arrested him.
Suhail was arrested at Chicagoโs OโHare Airport. Both men are now in U.S. custody, but their Dubai appearance with Paxton sharpened criticism. The Ken Paxton Dubai Trip now stands as another flashpoint in a campaign already marked by controversy.
Campaign Response Falls Short
Paxtonโs campaign did not explain why he celebrated with the indicted men. Instead, it framed him as a target of political persecution. The campaign compared his situation to President Donald Trumpโs legal and political battles.
Democratic critics seized on the video and questioned Paxtonโs judgment. The Democratic Senate Majority PAC said Paxton keeps finding new ways to shock voters. The group also highlighted his public affair and his association with fugitives from U.S. justice.
Supporters and Critics See High Stakes
Supporters view Paxton as a combative conservative who survives attacks because voters trust his record. They argue opponents inflate scandals to weaken a Republican Senate bid, but detractors see a pattern of ethical problems, from indictments to donor ties and personal turmoil.
The controversy comes as Paxton remains competitive against Democrat James Talarico. His campaign has weathered a grand jury indictment, divorce, leaked remarks and repeated attacks. Still, the Dubai footage gives critics another potent line of attack.
