Life Church restorative process leaders say Nathan Peternel will step aside temporarily. The Indianapolis megachurch pastor announced a “structured restorative process” in a Feb. 20 email. He said the long-term plan keeps him as lead pastor. He framed the move as necessary for healing and accountability. He also addressed rumors about private content and the church’s direction.
District leaders cite conduct concerns
Assemblies of God Indiana District leaders reviewed Peternel’s conduct. They concluded that some personal behaviors did not meet ministerial standards. Peternel said his “use and retention of private digital content” involving his spouse fell short. He called the findings “unbecoming of ministerial leadership.” He said he and his wife, Chrissy, are responding with humility, but they expect restoration.
Private content, hacking, and public fallout
Peternel said he made private, intimate photos and videos with his wife. He said the content was password-protected, but his son hacked it while high. Investigators later found more than 50 files showing Peternel’s parents nude or having sex. Peternel faces no criminal charges or investigation. Still, the Life Church restorative process now sits at the center of public attention.
Son’s CSAM case intensifies scrutiny
Last October, Jonathan Peternel, 24, was arrested for possessing and disseminating CSAM. Reports say some files depicted violent child molestation. Earlier this month, a court sentenced him to six years in prison, with the final two years on probation. He apologized in court and told his parents that their reputations were ruined because of him.
Departures and pressure for answers
Peternel told members the marital recordings were not sinful, but he admitted they may look unwise. Former congregants describe him as overly frank about sex, and some recount uncomfortable counseling questions. Reports also say he discussed filming within marriage with youth. Sources say two pastors and more than 100 members have recently left. Supporters say the Life Church restorative process protects due process and recognizes community good, but detractors echo talk-show host Rob Kendall’s calls for transparency about access to children, deleted podcast episodes, and leadership decisions.
