Theologian Walter Brueggemann remembered for his prophetic voice

Walter Brueggemann, one of the most influential Bible scholars of the 20th and 21st centuries, died on June 5 at his home in Michigan. He was 92. Brueggemann authored over 100 books on theology and biblical interpretation, leaving an enduring impact on Christian thought, particularly within mainline Protestant traditions.

A Voice for Prophetic Imagination

Brueggemann’s work focused on the Hebrew Bible, with special attention to the prophets. His 1978 classic, The Prophetic Imagination, has sold over a million copies and has become required reading in seminaries. In it, he urged readers to challenge prevailing political and cultural norms. He believed biblical prophets called people to envision alternative futures and resist empire-driven narratives.

Critical of Power, Rooted in Scripture

A fierce critic of consumerism, militarism, and nationalism, Brueggemann believed prophets held space for moral imagination. He rejected overly academic methods of biblical study that, in his view, distanced believers from the sacred text. Instead, he encouraged pastors to hear God’s voice directly through Scripture. His approach empowered clergy to address contemporary issues with theological depth.

A Life of Teaching and Ministry

Though never a pastor of a congregation, Brueggemann was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. He served as professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary until retiring in 2003. Previously, he taught at Eden Theological Seminary. His teaching career spanned decades, and he mentored generations of church leaders.

Lasting Legacy Amid Mixed Reactions

Supporters laud Brueggemann as a prophetic voice who connected Scripture to real-world struggles. They emphasize his influence on social justice theology and pastoral imagination. Critics, however, argue that his progressive views on politics and interpretation sometimes overshadowed doctrinal orthodoxy. Yet both sides acknowledge his unmatched scholarship and commitment to engaging Scripture with urgency and clarity.

Brueggemann is survived by his wife, Tia, and their sons James and John.
