The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) opened its 14th General Assembly on October 27 at Sarang Church, Seoul, setting an ambitious global goal: “The Gospel for Everyone by 2033.” The theme aligns with the anticipated 2,000th anniversary of Christ’s resurrection. WEA Executive Chair Rev. Goodwill Shana urged Evangelicals to renew their commitment to unity and global transformation.
“This assembly is more than a meeting,” Shana emphasized. “It is a time to pray, think, and reimagine how WEA can serve the global Church.” He framed the assembly as a turning point, with leadership transitioning to a new International Council and incoming Secretary General.
Leadership Transition and Vision for 2033
Incoming Secretary General Botrus Mansour addressed delegates for the first time, focusing on unity through diversity. Drawing from Psalm 133 and John 17, Mansour described biblical unity as mirroring the closeness of the Trinity. “That is the kind of bond we are called to live out,” he said.
He celebrated Evangelical diversity and called for cooperation beyond cultural and linguistic divides. “The wall of separation has been demolished,” he stated. “We are one in Christ.”
Asia’s Strategic Role in Evangelical Collaboration
Godfrey Yogarajah, chair of the Asia Evangelical Alliance, welcomed global delegates and underscored Asia’s pivotal role in Evangelical growth. “Asia is privileged to host this General Assembly,” he said. “Together, we strengthen the church and extend Christ’s love worldwide.”
Rev. Seok-soon Im of the Korea Evangelical Fellowship expressed gratitude to Sarang Church and Yoido Full Gospel Church for their support in hosting the event.
Supporters Embrace Unity; Detractors Cite Structural Challenges
Supporters of the assembly applaud its focus on cooperation, relationship-building, and long-term vision. They see the emphasis on unity as vital to global Evangelical witness.
Critics, however, question whether symbolic unity can overcome practical divisions. Some express concern that shifting leadership structures may hinder effective collaboration and the execution of long-term strategies.
Throughout the week, attendees will participate in worship services, panels, and strategic discussions designed to strengthen national and regional alliances.
