Rising Concerns About Antisemitism
A new survey reveals that four in ten American Jews experienced antisemitism in the past two years. The study, conducted by Impose in collaboration with UC Berkeley and the University of Rochester, reveals deep concern about antisemitism on campuses. Seventy-two percent of Jewish Americans worry about the issue, reflecting broad unease across denominations.
Disapproval of Trump’s Campus Policy
Despite concerns, nearly 60% disapprove of the Trump administration’s move to withhold federal funding from Harvard and UCLA. The administration argued the universities failed to address antisemitism adequately. Critics see the tactic as political, rather than protective of Jewish students.
Views on Political Motives
James Druckman of the University of Rochester said many respondents perceive the funding threats as political maneuvers. Three-fourths of participants view the administration as exploiting antisemitism for unrelated goals. This perception fuels skepticism about the sincerity of federal actions.
Free Speech and Academic Freedom Concerns
Opponents warn that Trump’s policy undermines free expression on campuses. Becca Israel of the Nexus Project said the administration’s mixed signals erode trust. She noted that while Trump claims to fight antisemitism, his administration cut the Office for Civil Rights responsible for investigations.
Institutional Negotiations and Divided Opinions
The administration has reached agreements with Columbia and Brown, while talks with Harvard continue. Partisan divides remain stark. Ninety-five percent of Harris voters believe Trump uses antisemitism to push a political agenda. In contrast, 91% of Trump voters trust his commitment to Jewish concerns.
Broader Policy Context
The survey also highlights divisions on foreign policy. Only 31% of respondents support Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. The findings reveal not only rising fears of antisemitism but also deep disagreement over how political leaders address the issue.
