Americans Have Shifted Toward the Conservative Side on several social and moral issues, according to Gallup’s latest Values and Beliefs Poll. The survey found lower acceptance of premarital sex, gambling, pornography, euthanasia, gender transition, and other behaviors.
Gallup surveyed 1,001 adults nationwide from May 1 to 17. The results show a broad movement toward stricter moral views, and several categories reached record lows.
Marriage, Sex, and Family Views Tighten
Childbirth outside marriage saw one of the sharpest declines. Last year, 67% of Americans called it morally acceptable, but support fell to 58%.
Views on contraception also shifted. Approval dropped from 90% to 83%, though most Americans still view birth control as acceptable.
Acceptance of sex between unmarried men and women dipped from 68% to 65%. Support for gay and lesbian relationships also slipped, moving from 64% to 62%.
Teen sex drew less approval as well. Gallup found 35% viewed it as morally acceptable, down from 41% last year.
Gambling, Pornography, and Medical Issues Lose Support
Americans Shift Conservative on gambling and pornography, too. Gambling acceptance fell from 63% to 57%, marking Gallup’s lowest recorded level.
Pornography approval declined from 35% to 31%. The trend shows growing public unease around sexual and entertainment behaviors.
Support for doctor-assisted suicide also weakened. Acceptance fell from 53% to 49%, so it no longer holds majority backing.
Capital punishment reached a new low. Gallup found 52% view the death penalty as morally acceptable, down from 56%.
Stem cell research also lost support. Acceptance declined from 63% to 59%, while support for gender transition fell from 40% to 38%.
Abortion Stays Steady as Debate Continues
Abortion views showed little change. Forty-nine percent called abortion morally acceptable, while 41% described it as morally wrong.
Supporters of the shifting attitudes may see renewed respect for traditional moral standards. Detractors may worry that the changes signal reduced acceptance for personal choice, medical autonomy, and LGBTQ rights.
