Kevin Brown, president of Asbury University, believes the 2023 Asbury revival may mark the beginning of a global Christian resurgence. Speaking at the World Evangelical Alliance’s General Assembly, Brown reflected on the unexpected 16-day revival that began during a routine chapel service in February 2023. The event drew over 50,000 people to Wilmore, Kentucky, including students from 287 universities worldwide.
Brown described the movement as a historic outpouring of the Holy Spirit, calling it “the most incredible experience” of his life. He hopes future generations will see it as the tremor before a spiritual earthquake.
Signs of Renewed Christian Fervor
Brown cited recent spiritual developments that suggest momentum is building worldwide. Events such as Gather 25, Baptize California, and Unite US have drawn massive crowds. In January 2024, 55,000 college students gathered in Atlanta for a multi-day worship event. By September, the Baptize America initiative saw over 650 churches baptize 30,000 people nationwide.
According to Brown, these moments represent a reversal of long-declining trends in American Christianity. Citing a recent survey of the U.S. religious landscape, he noted that more U.S. adults now consider their personal commitment to Jesus to be significant. Millennial church attendance is also rising.
Bible Reading and Church Attendance Surge
Brown pointed to growing Bible engagement. The American Bible Society’s 2025 report shows 10 million more Americans now identify as Bible readers—the highest in four years. He also referenced a “quiet revival” in Europe, reporting that church attendance in England and Wales has jumped by 50% since 2018.
He sees similar signs of awakening in countries such as China, India, New Zealand, and across Africa, particularly among younger believers.
Unity as the Measure of Revival
Brown concluded by asking how to recognize true revival. His answer: unity. He emphasized the biblical unity Jesus prayed for—not mere cooperation, but profound spiritual oneness modeled after the Trinity. “This is a heart matter,” Brown said. “An allegiance to God that supersedes every other allegiance.”
