Lovina Zook’s TikTok fame turned an Amish escape into a public story of faith, freedom, cooking, and trauma. Zook, now 23, left Iowa’s Swartzentruber Amish community before baptism, but she later faced that past online. In 2024, she joined a TikTok backstory trend and wore her dark green Amish dress again. Leaving Before a Lifelong Vow
Zook left home in 2021 after greasing door hinges with vegetable oil and hiding behind hay. She feared losing heaven, but she wanted the freedom to choose her own life. Scholar Karen Johnson-Weiner said that Amish baptism often occurs at ages 17 or 18. For many communities, baptism marks a lifelong promise to follow church ordinances. Zook left months before baptism, so she avoided excommunication and shunning.
Cooking Builds a Digital Bridge
Zook now lives in North Texas with her husband, Eli Zook, who also left the Amish. As her audience grew, she shifted into Amish cooking, practical skills, and personal storytelling. She makes coffee soup, poor man’s steak, raisin pie filling and Amish-style fruit pizza. Her cookbook, “Lovina’s Amish Cooking,” includes more than 200 recipes. Her videos have drawn nearly 100 million views, and followers often ask about her accent, dress, and childhood.
Tradition Without Romanticizing It
Zook rejects the “trad wife” label, even though her videos often show cooking, homemaking and rural skills. She says people can value handmade work without entering a church that they cannot freely leave. Zook also describes emotional, psychological, and spiritual abuse during childhood. Still, she and Eli remain Christian, and they plan to raise their child in a nondenominational church.
