Faith leaders demand return of Ukrainian children taken by Russia

Faith Leaders Demand Return of Ukrainian Children Taken by Russia

A coalition of faith-based organizations has issued a strong call for Russia to return nearly 20,000 Ukrainian children taken since its 2022 invasion. Spearheaded by Myal Greene of World Relief, the appeal emphasizes the urgent need to prioritize the children’s return in peace negotiations.

Broad Coalition of Religious Leaders Unites

The letter, addressed to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was signed by leaders from diverse Christian backgrounds. Signatories include NAE President Walter Kim, IRD President Mark Tooley, former Ambassador Susan Jacobs, and Rev. Rona Tyndall of the United Church of Christ. Their unified voice reflects broad religious concern for the fate of the displaced children.

Grave Allegations of Abuse and Forced Assimilation

The letter accuses Russian forces of political re-education, forced assimilation, and illegal adoption of Ukrainian children. It claims that children have been placed with Russian families and stripped of their Ukrainian identities. Some were reportedly subjected to physical abuse, denied basic needs, and barred from contacting their families.

Appeal for U.S. Leadership in Peace Talks

The coalition insists that the return of the children must be a non-negotiable condition for peace. They urge U.S. leaders to leverage their influence, declaring, “No peace deal should be finalized until Ukraine’s children are returned home.” The letter calls for their immediate repatriation before any further diplomatic discussions proceed.

Ethical and Religious Grounds for Action

Brent Leatherwood of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission stated Christians have a moral duty to defend the vulnerable. He condemned the deportation as “evil” and a violation of children’s rights. He warned against allowing children to become bargaining chips in international diplomacy.

Supporters Cite Morality; Critics Warn of Political Risks

Supporters stress the moral imperative of protecting innocent children. They argue the U.S. must lead with compassion. However, detractors fear the stance could complicate already fragile negotiations. Some warn that pushing this issue too hard may stall peace efforts.
