Hebrew Bible, considered as world’s oldest, may bring $50 million during auction

A Hebrew Bible, which is considered by experts as the oldest in the world, may bring $50 million during auction later this year. According to reports, the ancient religious text which is believed to be “one of the most important and singular texts in human history,” will be displayed at London’s Sotheby’s between February 22-28. It will be presented for auction in New York in May, where it may be sold for an amount between $30 million-$50 million. The Bible, known as the Codex Sassoon, is considered the oldest and also most complete Hebrew Bible, and it dates from the period between the late 9th century to the beginning of the 10th century.

Washington Examiner reports:

A Hebrew Bible believed to be the oldest in the world is hoping to fetch $50 million when it hits the auctionblock later this year.

The religious text is considered to be “one of the most important and singular texts in human history,” and it is set to be displayed at Sotheby’s in London between Feb. 22 and Feb. 28, according to reports.

It will then hit the auction block in May in New York, where it is anticipated to be sold from $30 million to $50 million, a report noted.

The text, the Codex Sassoon, dates from the late 9th to the early 10th century, and it is reported to be the oldest and most complete Hebrew Bible.

“This is the most important document to come to auction ever,” said Sharon Mintz, Sotheby’s Judaica expert on books and manuscripts.

“This is the most significant document that I have ever had the pleasure of examining, researching [and] holding,” said Mintz.

The Hebrew Bible is widely recognized as the foundation for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
