Formal Recognition Affirms Longstanding Navajo Episcopal Identity
On June 24, the Episcopal Church formally recognized the Missionary Diocese of Navajoland, elevating it from its previous status as an area mission. Church leaders and Navajo Episcopalians emphasized this move affirms a longstanding spiritual and operational reality. “Navajoland was already living as a missionary diocese in spirit and practice,” said GJ Gordy, a member of the Executive Council.
Executive Council Approves Constitution, Ending Years-Long Journey
The decision came during the Executive Council’s meeting in suburban Baltimore. It concluded a process that began with a 2022 General Convention resolution supporting Navajoland’s self-determination. In January 2024, Navajoland held a special convocation to approve its request for missionary diocese status. The constitution, written in both English and Diné, was adopted at Navajoland’s first diocesan convention on June 7.
Self-Governance and Cultural Integrity at the Forefront
The new constitution honors Navajo traditions while aligning with the governance of the Episcopal Church. One article commits the diocese to uphold “the historic and sacred traditions of the Navajo people.” The preamble emphasizes harmony, forgiveness, and the Navajo spiritual path known as the Beauty Way. Leaders say this balance empowers Navajoland to shape its spiritual future.
Historic Milestone Met with Gratitude and Emotion
Clergy and elders from Navajoland joined the Executive Council session via Zoom to express their appreciation. The Rev. Leon Sampson, speaking through tears, said, “We thank you for allowing us to be a part of [the church] … to see us as we are, Episcopalians.” The Rev. Cornelia Eaton praised the years of work leading to this moment, calling it historic.
Future Support and Leadership Search Underway
Navajoland will receive nearly $1.5 million over three years for ministries and $800,000 to support a bishop. Previously, bishops were appointed by the House of Bishops. Now, Navajoland can elect its own. A search committee is already working on that process, a key step toward full self-governance.
