At the Chapelle de Fuveau Church of Christ in Marseille, France, language differences are no barrier to worship. The small congregation, located in France’s second-largest city, draws believers from around the world. Among them was Melanie van der Vorst, a Dutch social worker who visited the church while supporting a client in nearby Mollans-sur-Ouvèze. Despite not speaking French, van der Vorst found a welcoming community through a mix of faith, shared connections, and multilingual support.
Bridging Barriers with Technology and Shared Faith
Van der Vorst contacted the church ahead of time to ask about an English translation. Dolores Dauner, the minister’s wife, answered the call. Speaking Dutch, Dauner explained the congregation’s use of earphones for live English translation during worship. That reassurance, along with the church’s strong singing ministry, encouraged van der Vorst to attend. Her two-hour drive to Marseille reflected a growing trend: believers connecting across cultures with the help of technology and a common mission.
A Global Mix of Worshippers and Languages
The church’s diversity reflects the international nature of its mission. Rafael Reis, a Brazilian intern, speaks Portuguese, English, Spanish, and is learning French. Mila Nataliya Govorukha, a Ukrainian philologist and refugee, speaks Russian, Ukrainian, English, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and is also learning French. Others, like the Hassanis from Algeria, navigate multiple Arabic dialects and French, and have embraced Christianity after immigrating.
Americans Join in Fellowship and Restoration
An American mission team visited Marseille to help restore an abandoned monastery, a project led by the Chapelle de Fuveau church. Their appreciation for French hospitality culminated in singing a French hymn. Among the volunteers was Krista Jacoby of Pennsylvania, who praised the experience of multilingual fellowship and the unity found in shared belief.
Supporters Praise Diversity; Some Note Challenges
Supporters of the church’s international approach highlight its inclusiveness and spiritual impact. They see it as a model for global Christian unity. However, some visitors acknowledge challenges in navigating unfamiliar languages and customs. Despite this, they find hope in the universal message of faith.
