Trusted Minister, Dark Secrets: Indiana pastor sentenced to nine years

A federal case ended with a nine-year prison sentence for Aaron Paul Lockman. The former children’s pastor pleaded guilty to possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Investigators tied his case to WhatsApp messages and an earlier arrest, and the prison sentence followed.

The FBI began investigating after reviewing evidence tied to Matthew D. Constant. Constant led Owensboro Public Schools in Kentucky at the time. Agents found chats in which Constant and Lockman shared CSAM and discussed sexual interest in minors.

Church Role Put Lockman Near Children

Lockman, 24, worked at Redemption Christian Church in Jasper, Indiana. He served from January 2023 until March 12, 2024. Authorities notified church leaders that day, so the church fired him immediately and barred him from all three campuses.

In his position, Lockman supervised young boys and built close access. He also took boys on one-on-one outings, including restaurant trips. Prosecutors said he used his role to cultivate special relationships with vulnerable boys.

Evidence Found on Church-Issued Devices

Investigators found many videos on Lockman’s church-issued computer and cellphone. The materials included sexual abuse of children younger than 12. Prosecutors stressed the disturbing volume and the ages shown, and they argued he exploited proximity to children.

U.S. Attorney Tom Wheeler said Lockman abused a ministerial position of trust. He also credited federal partners for swift action, as the investigation prevented Lockman from posing further risk.

U.S. District Judge Matthew P. Brookman sentenced Lockman on Feb. 24. The court imposed nine years in prison, five years of supervised release, and restitution. FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O’Malley said the sentence reinforced accountability.

Lockman’s attorney, Matthew Lemme, said his client felt shame but expected no sympathy. Lemme said Lockman cooperated with law enforcement, so agencies could review his actions. He added that reviewers found no conduct beyond what appeared in court.

Church Response and Ongoing Concerns

Redemption Christian Church said it moved quickly after learning of the FBI investigation. It notified parents and volunteers within 48 hours and informed the congregation by March 17, 2024. The church said it had no reason to believe Lockman victimized a child at any campus.

The statement noted Lockman passed background and reference checks, but leaders said he deceived people in his life. Supporters emphasized his swift firing, rapid notifications to congregants, and the offering of counseling resources. Detractors worry that background checks missed warning signs. Constant, whose case led investigators to Lockman, received a 30-year federal sentence in May 2025.
