Northern Seminary is facing internal turmoil after announcing President Joy J. Moore’s departure—just hours before her formal installation. The announcement has triggered widespread confusion among students, faculty, and supporters. Moore, appointed in November 2024, was the first African American to lead the seminary in its 111-year history. The seminary had previously faced leadership challenges, with former president William Shiell resigning after allegations of bullying and retaliation.
A Celebratory Installation Turned Sour
On the eve of Moore’s expected installation, attendees gathered at a celebratory dinner in Naperville. They heard emotional tributes and a heartfelt speech from Moore, which was met with a standing ovation. Yet, as the night concluded, trustees Brian Johnson and James Stellwagen announced from the stage that Moore had “discerned” she would no longer serve as president. Their unexpected announcement left guests shocked and confused.
Conflicting Accounts Deepen the Crisis
The following day, confusion intensified. At a worship service intended for Moore’s installation, Moore stated publicly that she had not resigned. The contradiction sparked further speculation about what transpired behind the scenes. Pastor Dennis Blackwell accused the seminary of racism during the event, while other supporters, including Keith Boyette, defended Moore on social media. “She did not resign… Pray for Joy,” Boyette wrote.
Supporters Demand Transparency
Many see Moore’s departure as part of a deeper problem. Supporters have called for accountability and clarity from the board. The seminary initially published a statement online stating that Moore had concluded her service, but it was removed within 24 hours. Moore has not spoken publicly since. Meanwhile, the board and Moore are reportedly still in conversation, though details remain private.
Northern Seminary Faces Leadership Reckoning
Northern Seminary has been working to rebuild trust following its recent controversies. Moore’s appointment was part of that renewal, following a unanimous board vote after a nine-month search. Her abrupt departure raises questions about the board’s decision-making and governance practices. The seminary’s leadership remains uncertain with ongoing discussions between Moore and the trustees.
