Hardline Crackdown: Old rite mass attendance branded “public schism”

An archdiocesan statement in Maceió warned of excommunication for unauthorized celebrations of the Traditional Latin Mass. Archbishop Carlos Alberto Breis Pereira, OFM, said attendance outside one approved site counts as public schism. He tied the warning to participation in an old rite Mass at any other location. He said the penalty follows automatically, so Catholics risk immediate separation from sacramental life.

Single approved chapel and time set the boundary

Breis Pereira told Catholics they may attend the Extraordinary Form only at the Chapel of St. Vincent de Paul in Maceió. The chapel hosts the liturgy every Sunday. He described the permission as a concession granted with Holy See approval. He added that no other venue may host the old rite Mass. The statement barred celebrations in religious settings and in civil associations as well.

Canon law language frames the decree as schism enforcement

The decree cited canon 751 to define schism as refusal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff or communion with the Church. It also cited canon 1364 §1, which attaches latae sententiae excommunication to schism. The text warned clerics of further penalties under canon 1336 §§2–4. Social media linked the move to the Society of Saint Pius X, but the statement never named it. Instead, it aimed at all Masses using older rubrics outside authorization.

Archdiocese history shows years of tightening restrictions

After Pope Benedict XVI issued Summorum Pontificum in 2007, Archbishop Antônio Muniz Fernandes reportedly refused to implement it and banned all Extraordinary Form Masses. In 2023, Muniz read a sweeping prohibition during Mass. He condemned invitations to priests “not in communion with the Church” and rejected Tridentine gatherings, even in apartments. After the release of Traditionis custodes, many dioceses tightened rules, but Maceió appears to go further by labeling unauthorized attendance as schism.

Supporters and detractors brace for Vatican scrutiny

Vatican sources said a recourse to the Dicastery for Legislative Texts could test the decree’s definition of schism and the archbishop’s reach over liturgies in religious houses. Supporters argue that the Traditional Latin Mass excommunication warning serves to defend unity and clarify boundaries by pushing Catholics toward the approved celebration. Detractors fear overreach and invalid penalties, so they expect challenges based on earlier cases. Past disputes included Lincoln measures tied to prohibited societies and a 1991 Honolulu case later overturned after review.
