Senior Pastor Dismissed After Adultery Investigation
The First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, North Carolina, has dismissed its senior pastor, Pendleton Barnes Peery, following revelations of a five-year pattern of adultery and concealment. Peery, a sixth-generation Presbyterian minister, admitted to violating both his marriage and ordination vows. The Charlotte Presbytery initiated an investigation after receiving a tip, keeping First Presbyterian leaders unaware until the findings were shared.
Investigation and Charges
A church investigative committee charged Peery with two counts of adultery and two counts of wrongful concealment of inappropriate conduct. Reports show his misconduct included online behavior and extramarital affairs, but no church members or children were involved. The Charlotte Observer noted that Peery’s name has been removed from the church’s website, though his sermon library remains accessible.
Peery’s Admission and Apology
In a letter to the congregation, Peery confessed that his secret life began with anonymous online activity, later leading to multiple affairs. He expressed shame, acknowledged the hurt he caused, and cited Psalm 51, asking for God’s mercy. His admission confirmed details uncovered by the Presbytery’s investigation.
Church Response and Support
First Presbyterian Church issued a statement affirming it is navigating this difficult period “with care and transparency.” Worship services and ministries will continue as scheduled. Rev. Anna Dickson encouraged members to seek pastoral support and asked the community for prayers. During her Sept. 7 sermon, she said the church had received hundreds of supportive messages and acknowledged the emotional toll on the congregation.
Community Reactions
Supporters praised the church’s transparency and commitment to continue ministry despite leadership challenges. They expressed compassion for Peery’s family and for those directly affected. Critics, however, voiced frustration over the extent of the misconduct and questioned how long it remained undiscovered. Peery has been officially removed from ministry for at least three years.
