Investigator Finds Michael Brown Engaged in Misconduct
An independent report by Firefly found Messianic apologist Michael Brown engaged in “sexually abusive misconduct” with a 20-year-old employee and an “inappropriate relationship” with a married congregant in the early 2000s. The investigation, initiated by Brown’s ministry, Line of Fire (LOF), followed earlier allegations reported by The Roys Report. Brown was found to have touched his secretary inappropriately and exchanged sexually related communications with the married woman.
Patterns of Evasion and Suppression Highlighted
Firefly reported Brown “deliberately deflected” questions regarding misconduct to evade accountability. Investigators also found that he acted to suppress allegations to protect his ministry’s reputation. Evidence showed that Brown denied accusations from ministry leaders confronting him, despite an extensive review of witnesses and documents by Firefly.
Additional Findings of Improper Conduct
Beyond the two principal incidents, Firefly found Brown exhibited troubling patterns of behavior. He admonished women over their dress, enforced strict dating rules, and showed physical affection toward female students. Brown also invited young women to his hotel rooms under casual pretenses, raising further concerns about appropriate boundaries.
Supporters Acknowledge Positive Aspects of Ministry
Despite the serious findings, Firefly noted many supporters testified to Brown’s leadership, integrity, and “purity of heart.” These testimonies painted a more complex picture, showing Brown’s wide influence on ministries worldwide. However, supporters’ praise did not erase concerns over the damaging impact of his misconduct.
LOF Board Plans Response as Report Goes Public
The LOF board published Firefly’s full report online but has not issued an official statement. A spokesperson said the board’s accountability team will release a plan next week. Firefly refrained from recommending Brown’s removal but urged LOF to implement stronger training and accountability measures moving forward.
