New pope, new hopes: Broglio reflects on Leo XIV’s role in a divided world

A Surprise, Yet Welcome Choice

Archbishop Timothy Broglio, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, responded positively to Pope Leo XIV’s election. Speaking to Vatican News, he admitted his surprise at the cardinals’ decision but expressed trust in the new pontiff’s leadership. He recalled interactions with Pope Leo during synodal meetings and official visits to Rome, describing him as warm, open, and collaborative.

Historical Echoes in a Name

The papal name “Leo” choice immediately evoked comparisons to Pope Leo XIII. Broglio noted that Leo XIII was instrumental in defining Catholic social teaching, particularly through Rerum Novarum. He also pointed to the new pope’s Roman roots, suggesting the local community would find pride in his election.

A Voice for Global Peace

Broglio emphasized the need for the pope to act as a global peacemaker. He cited ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, Africa, and between India and Pakistan. “That he would speak of peace, I think is essential,” he said. Broglio hopes Pope Leo XIV will use his position to foster international dialogue and reconciliation.

Unity Within the Church

The archbishop highlighted Pope Leo’s early focus on unity as critical, particularly for the U.S. Church. He called for greater listening and mutual respect among Catholics, reminding the faithful that “each person is created in the image of God.” Broglio sees the pope’s message as inviting healing and constructive dialogue.

An International Pastor for a Global Church

Broglio praised Pope Leo XIV’s multicultural background—French-Italian heritage and Latin American pastoral experience—and argued that such diversity equips the pope to understand and guide the global Church more effectively. “It brings depth, perspective, and a richness,” he said.

Language and Leadership

During his first address, Broglio supported Pope Leo’s decision to speak in Italian, recognizing its symbolic importance. He also acknowledged how the pope’s familiarity with Spanish will comfort many Catholics, especially following Pope Francis’s death. Broglio concluded by offering prayers for a peaceful and successful papacy.
