TobyMac on the future of Christian music: “Freshness we needed”

At the K-Love Fan Awards press conference in Nashville, iconic Christian artist TobyMac expressed optimism for the future of Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). Nominated for Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Nothin’ Sweeter,” TobyMac pointed to a vibrant group of emerging artists revitalizing the genre.

New Voices Reshape the Genre

TobyMac praised artists like Brandon Lake, Forrest Frank, Jamie MacDonald, Terrian, and Jon Reddick for ushering in a new era. He described their music as “fresh” and a necessary shift for CCM. “We’ve needed this freshness for a while,” he said, expressing gratitude for witnessing the change. According to him, this wave brings hope and signals a healthy direction for the industry.

A Lifelong Commitment to Christian Music

Reflecting on his long career, which began with the influential group DC Talk, TobyMac said he feels a deep sense of responsibility toward the Christian music genre. While not claiming ownership, he likened himself to a shepherd of the genre. He emphasized that CCM has not only shaped his career but also served as a spiritual anchor.

A Songwriter First

TobyMac described himself as “a songwriter disguised as a pop artist.” While others may shine effortlessly on stage, he stressed that his true passion lies in crafting meaningful lyrics. From his DC Talk days to today, he’s written songs with a clear spiritual mission—to point listeners toward God and inspire reconnection with their faith.

Staying Grounded in Faith

TobyMac credited daily Bible reading and prayer for keeping him spiritually centered, especially during tours. “God speaks to us through His Word, and we speak to Him through prayer,” he said. This two-way communication, he explained, is essential to maintaining a genuine relationship with God and fueling his creative purpose.
