York University in York, Nebraska, officially inaugurated Dr. Timothy Westbrook as its 22nd president on September 26. Westbrook replaces Samuel Smith, who departed in 2024 to lead Mount Dora Christian Academy and Childrenโs Home in Florida. The ceremony drew faculty, students, and representatives from fellow Churches of Christ-affiliated institutions.
A Background Rooted in Ministry and Education
Before his appointment, Westbrook served as director of Equip, Harding University’s online Bible and ministry program. His academic journey includes degrees from Harding University, Harding School of Theology, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He also spent nearly ten years as a missionary in Hungary, an experience he says shaped his leadership philosophy.
Vision for a Bold and Faith-Centered Future
In his inaugural address, Westbrook called on the York community to โlearn and live the York experience.โ He reflected on the universityโs close ties to both the city of York and the Churches of Christ. He emphasized the importance of preserving the schoolโs faith-based mission while boldly envisioning its future. โWe will work together to ensure our students are prepared for the future,โ Westbrook declared.
Support and Skepticism Surround the Transition
Supporters say Westbrookโs mix of academic credentials and missionary service positions him to strengthen Yorkโs spiritual and educational mission. They also welcome the appointment of his wife, Anessa Westbrook, as co-executive director of the Center for Ministry. She has recently begun engaging in broader church conversations, including a podcast on the future of small-town congregations.
Critics, however, voice concerns about leadership continuity, noting the school has had three presidents in just over a decade. Some also question whether a strong focus on church affiliation might limit Yorkโs broader academic appeal in an increasingly competitive higher education market.
Broad Institutional Support
Leaders from six fellow Christian universities, including Harding, Abilene Christian, and Oklahoma Christian, attended the inauguration. Their presence signals widespread support within the Churches of Christ academic network, which views Westbrookโs appointment as a stabilizing force.
