Confession ignites a church crisis
A scandal at Calvary Chapel Rockford erupted after Pastor Charlie Heffelfinger admitted to misconduct involving a congregant. The Rockford pastor’s confession centered on kissing a church member and sending sexual texts. Heffelfinger planned a brief, child-appropriate statement during the April 12 service. But the admission hit like a match, so the sanctuary quickly turned tense.
Leaked footage shows confrontation and police response
A ministry leader, John Christensen, interrupted and denounced the confession as a โlieโ and a โsham.โ The leaked video shows congregants reacting in real time, and some voices cheered Christensen. Police entered as the confrontation escalated. Officers escorted Christensen out, but members shouted objections as the scene turned chaotic.
Two congregants arrested as tempers flare
During the removal, a married couple allegedly pushed officers, and police arrested them. Records identify Archie R. Linn, 62, and Leila L. Linn, 67, both charged with aggravated battery of a police officer. Reports noted no weapon and minor or no injuries. Authorities released the pair pending a May 14 arraignment, and the arrests deepened the Calvary Chapel Rockford scandal.
Pastor resigns amid scrutiny and legal questions
Heffelfinger later described the moment as humiliating, but said exposure forced accountability. He told The Roys Report the relationship lasted 10 days and involved one kiss, plus sexual texts. He denied abusing clergy authority because he viewed the woman as a family friend. Experts still classify such conduct as adult clergy sexual abuse, which is illegal in 14 states and D.C. but not in Illinois. Heffelfinger resigned as pastor and as principal of the churchโs K-12 school, and he and his wife entered intensive marriage counseling in Indiana.
Elders urge unity as supporters and detractors clash
Elders acknowledged โrecent developments,โ paused several ministries, and later read Heffelfingerโs resignation letter to the church. They said many wanted him to stay, but he stepped down after seeing pain. Supporters of Christensen and the Linns argued leaders hid the full truth and exaggerated threats. Detractors backed the elders, blamed a disruptive โwolf,โ and warned the church faces financial strain as members leave.
