Barna’s Stark Warning: Churches fail to build a Biblical worldview

George Barna is sounding an alarm about biblical worldview alignment in the United States. He says churches and leaders often fail to instill biblical beliefs. New survey data also show that most Americans lack beliefs consistent with a biblical worldview. Barna links this gap to weak discipleship, so he urges focused mentoring because change remains possible.

American Worldview Inventory 2026 details method and scope

The Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University released the second installment of its American Worldview Inventory 2026 on Tuesday. Researchers surveyed 2,000 adults in January by phone and online. The sampling error is about plus-or-minus 2 points at the 95% confidence level. The project measures biblical alignment across eight categories of belief and behavior that shape worldview.

Most categories show little to no biblical alignment

In “purpose and calling,” 19% showed full biblical alignment, and 13% showed some alignment. But 68% showed little to no alignment. In “faith practices,” 16% showed full alignment, and 16% showed some alignment, while 68% showed little to no alignment. On “Lifestyle, Behavior, and Relationships,” 74% showed little to no alignment, and the same share appeared in “Sin, Salvation, and God Relationships.”

Truth, creation, family, and human nature register sharp gaps

For “Bible, Truth, and Morals,” 77% showed little to no alignment with the Bible. Fourteen percent showed some alignment, and 10% showed full alignment. For “God, Creation, and History,” 79% showed little to no alignment, but only 7% showed full alignment. “Family and the Value of Life” also landed at 79% with little to no, so just 5% showed full alignment. “Human Character and Human Nature” reached 82% with little to no.

Barna urges a strategic push, but critics may question the framing

Researchers classify adults as Integrated Disciples, Emergent Followers, or World Citizens. They estimate Emergent Followers total about 25 million people. Barna argues that upgrading them could transform church health and strengthen alignment with a biblical worldview. He targets weaknesses in “Family and the Value of Life” and “God, Creation, and History,” and he cites concerns about animism, abortion ambiguity, sacrifice, and faith sharing. Supporters see a clear roadmap for renewal, but detractors may dispute the categories, the conclusions, or the cultural assumptions behind biblical worldview alignment.
