Faith Leaders Rally Around Greater Than Campaign
A coalition of conservative Christian groups has launched the Greater Than campaign, aiming to overturn the 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage. Led by the advocacy group Them Before Us, the campaign argues that the ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges redefined both marriage and parenthood in harmful ways. Supporters say children have a natural right to both a mother and a father, and the coalition seeks to restore that standard in U.S. law.
Broad Faith-Based Support Fuels the Movement
Greater Than brings together major conservative and religious organizations, including Focus on the Family, Live Action, the Colson Center, and Word on Fire. Prominent individuals like Lila Rose, Steve Deace, Robert P. George, and Heidi St. John have endorsed the campaign. Organizers believe the 10-year anniversary of Obergefell presents a critical moment to challenge the ruling, especially given the current ideological makeup of the Supreme Court.
Concerns from Critics and Legal Hurdles
However, critics argue that the effort threatens established legal protections and could reignite social divisions. Opponents say the campaign disregards the rights and dignity of same-sex couples and their families. They also note that in 2022, Congress codified same-sex marriage protections in federal law with bipartisan support, making reversal more difficult.
Legal Strategy Faces Recent Setbacks
Although social conservatives see a potential opening with a more conservative Supreme Court, legal efforts have so far failed. In November, the court declined to hear a challenge from former Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, signaling reluctance to revisit Obergefell. Still, campaign leaders insist now is the time to mobilize churches and families to push for change.
Organizers Focus on Children’s Rights
At the heart of the campaign is the belief that children are best served by a heterosexual, two-parent household. The coalition frames its message as prioritizing child welfare over adult preferences. According to founder Katy Faust, no other group had taken on this specific legal goal, so Them Before Us decided to lead the charge.
