Tensions rise as Andy Stanley responds to abuse allegations

Allegations Surface Against North Point Pastor Andy Stanley

Popular pastor and author Andy Stanley is denying claims that he knew about Reggie Joiner’s alleged abuse nearly two decades ago. The anonymous accusation was published on Hagar’s Voice, where the woman detailed years of clergy sexual abuse by Joiner, founder of the Orange curriculum. Joiner resigned from Orange last year after admitting to an inappropriate relationship with former CEO Kristen Ivy, who later described it as clergy abuse.

Stanley Responds to Accusations

In a staff meeting released by North Point Community Church, Stanley acknowledged the woman’s account but denied protecting Joiner. He explained that the 2006 meeting with the woman did not reveal allegations of abuse. Stanley emphasized that if they had known the full truth, they would have acted immediately. He expressed frustration toward Danielle Strickland, founder of Hagar’s Voice, for not giving the church prior notice of the publication.

Critics Question North Point’s Response

Advocate Danielle Strickland criticized Stanley’s focus on process over accountability, arguing he should be more concerned with the church’s handling of past abuse. The woman alleged that many at North Point were aware of Joiner’s inappropriate behavior but failed to act. She claimed she was pressured into silence and criticized the ongoing investigation by Orange’s board as biased and lacking transparency.

Church Leadership Details Past Actions

North Point’s executive director of family ministries, Kendra Fleming, recounted reviewing Joiner’s suspicious phone records in 2006. Fleming and Stanley met with the woman, who allegedly downplayed the situation at the time. Fleming admitted that no deeper concerns were raised during the meeting and emphasized that Joiner’s resignation from North Point was unrelated to the allegations.

Survivors Demand Greater Accountability

The anonymous woman voiced skepticism about the independent investigation led by Orange’s legal counsel, claiming it favors the organization over survivors. She cited delayed responses, gaslighting, and victim-blaming as ongoing issues. Meanwhile, the Orange board maintains that it is committed to thoroughly addressing all concerns through its ongoing investigation.
