Savannah Guthrie’s faith tested after mother’s shocking disappearance

Savannah Guthrie is leaning on her faith while her mother remains missing. On Monday, Feb. 2, she asked for prayers on social media. She wrote about love, hope, and unity, and she pointed followers toward God. But the request also underscored a family facing fear and uncertainty.

Authorities Say Nancy Guthrie Was Abducted

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing on Feb. 1. Authorities believe someone abducted her from her Catalina Foothills home near Tucson. Supporters have rallied around the family online and in their community.

A Family Message Anchored in Prayer

In a video shared Wednesday night, Guthrie appeared with her siblings Annie and Camron. She addressed her mother as “God’s precious daughter” and spoke of God’s presence, “even in this valley.” She said they pray without ceasing, that they will hold Nancy again. The message aimed to comfort Nancy and rally viewers to keep hoping.

Jenna Bush Hager Highlights Guthrie’s Example

Jenna Bush Hager said Nancy was pivotal in shaping Savannah’s deep faith, goodness, and optimism. She shared that she chose Guthrie as godmother to her son Henry “Hal” in 2019 because of that faith. Bush Hager also noted their shared church community and said many are thinking about the Guthrie family.

A Multifaith Home and a Public Witness

Guthrie has said she was raised Baptist and attended church often. She married Michael Feldman, who is Jewish, and they teach their children about both traditions. She told Reveal in 2020 that they celebrate holidays from both faiths, but they also expect hard questions later. In February 2025, she told Us Weekly she wants her children to know God is there, because parents cannot protect them from everything.

Her Book Reflects a Faith Tested by Anxiety and Loss

Guthrie wrote about her relationship with God in her 2024 book, “Mostly What God Does.” She said the project felt vulnerable, but it also felt necessary. The title draws from Ephesians 5:1-2 in The Message: “Mostly what God does is love you.” She wrote about anxiety before her 2012 “Today” debut, constantly repeating, “God is with me.” She also recalled losing her father at 16. She argues that faith and doubt can coexist.
