Ukrainian refugee finds home and hope in Romanian Christian community

War Reaches Donbas, Shattering Peace

Dmitro Isaiev lived a quiet life in the Donbas region of Ukraine until war erupted in 2014. Russian aggression brought conflict to his doorstep, turning nearby fields into frontlines. As millions fled, Dmitro chose to stay and open his home to fellow Ukrainians. From 2014 to 2022, he sheltered displaced families, offering refuge amidst the chaos.

Romania Offers Sanctuary Amid Invasion

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Dmitro fled to Arad, Romania. There, he was embraced by the local Christian community, especially the members of Harvest Church, led by Pastor Cristian Barbosu. Dmitro credits their open-heartedness as a true reflection of Christian love. “The nature of Christ’s people is to be open,” he says.

Local Efforts Reflect Deep Faith

Harvest Church had prepared for the influx of Ukrainian refugees. Members opened their homes, rented a hotel for housing, and created a massive kitchen for communal meals. Weekly medical care, job support, and documentation aid were provided. Volunteers made 14-hour drives to Ukraine with food, clothes, and supplies.

Sacrifices Show Depth of Commitment

Church member Delia Vat summarized the community’s approach: “If your heart is open, then you can open your home.” Her husband, Nelu, exemplified this by hiring Dmitro and donating an industrial generator to a Ukrainian church now serving as a clinic and school. Even Dmitro’s dental work was covered by a Romanian pastor, showing radical generosity.

Critics Warn of Overreliance on Faith-Based Aid

Supporters view the church’s actions as a model of living faith, transforming words into deeds. They praise the unity and compassion extended across borders. However, detractors raise concerns about the lack of state-led refugee infrastructure, fearing overdependence on religious organizations. Some warn that faith-based aid may not always reach everyone equally.
